Finals Results

1999 St. Thomas Academy (Phillips & Gamradt) over Minneapolis South (Oberly & Lawler)
1998 Apple Valley (Kaufenberg & Sexton) over Mankato West (Chowdery & Fowler)
1997 Hopkins (? & ?) over Blake (Garen & ?)
The 1996 Royal Cup was decided on some card game (probably poker) won by Apple Valley over Blake. Not learning anything from history, Blake proceeded to lose the 1997 Roseville tournament to Hopkins playing Spades.

1987 Mankato West (Brown & Barnett) over Roseville (Shaw & Kumar)
The first year of the Roseville tournament was in 1987. In the early years of the tourney, the brackets for semifinals were a bit "loose," because it was felt that it smelt a little bit if you won your own tournament. Much to the team's chagrin, the tournament staff occasionally took steps to make it difficult for Roseville debaters.

The first year, 1987, Roseville mixed up partners. I was debating with Kathy Kerr, and Kristin Shaw and Satish Kumar were debating with each other (on the Latin America topic). Shaw/Kumar broke 2nd seed, I think, and we were going to be either 3rd or 4th seeds--but in order to decrease the chances of winning the tournament, Kathy and I were dropped from the semis and Shaw/Kumar became the 4th seed. They made it to finals and lost to Mankato West (Mike Brown and Chris? Barnett).
