LILI TAYLOR STARS IN
NEW TRANSLATION OF ANOUILH’S ANTIGONE
FOR RADIO BROADCAST.
VENICE, CA — L.A. Theatre Works presents Jean Anouilh’s Antigone, in a new translation by Christopher Nixon. Brendon Fox directs Lili Taylor in the title role for five performances at the Skirball Cultural Center, April 6 through 10. All performances are recorded to air on L. A Theatre Works’ nationally-syndicated radio theater series, The Play’s The Thing, which broadcasts weekly on public and satellite radio.
Originally produced in Paris in 1942, during Hitler’s occupation of France, Anouilh’s updated version of the ancient Greek tragedy by Sophocles was a thinly disguised attack on the Nazis and the Vichy government. The body of Polynices, son of Oedipus and brother of Antigone, has been ordered to remain unburied by Creon, newly crowned king of Thebes. Antigone defies the law, sealing her own fate. Antigone’s faithfulness to her dead brother and his proper burial, and her defiance of the dictator Creon, was seen by the French audience as theater of the résistance. Ironically, the Germans allowed the play to be performed - presumably because they found Creon’s arguments for dictatorship so convincing.
What is the value of civil order when the law goes against human decency? What should one be willing to die for?
“The play refutes a “black-and-white” view of life,” says translator Christopher Nixon. “Creon wants to manipulate Antigone and the people of Thebes into a nicely packaged version of happiness, which Antigone refuses. She dies; he’s left totally alone. Each has won, but at what cost? The play gives us much to think about.”
The Play’s the Thing airs every Saturday night on 89.3 KPCC from 10 pm to midnight, and is streamed live at www.kpcc.org for one week following each broadcast. The Play’s the Thing can also be heard on 88.3 & 102.3 KCLU in Ventura and Santa Barbara; 94.1 KPFA in Northern California (streamed live for one week following each broadcast at www.kpfa.org); 89.7 WGBH in Boston; 94.9 KUOW in Seattle; 88.9 WQCS in central Florida; as well as on many other public radio stations nationwide and XM Satellite Radio. THE FACTS
WHAT:
Antigone - The body of Polynices, son of Oedipus and brother of Antigone, has been ordered to remain unburied by Creon, newly crowned king of Thebes. Antigone defies the law, sealing her own fate. What is the value of civil order when the law goes against human decency? What should one die for? Originally produced in Paris during the Nazi occupation, Anouilh’s Antigone was seen by the French as theater of the résistance and by the Germans as an affirmation of an authoritarian regime. Subtlety abounds in this modern retelling of the timeless Greek tragedy. All performances are recorded to air on L. A Theatre Works’ nationally-syndicated radio theater series, The Play’s The Thing, which broadcasts weekly on public and satellite radio.
