General Outlook for the Month

Coming off the big planetary storm pattern of the May full moon (on 5-30), June seems like a much needed let-down. The energies rarely get well organized or build to great intensities. Which may be a blessing, since it seems that the connections between planets this month are mostly stressful and difficult. In general, this is a time to tackle problems as they come up. Note that there are an unusually large number of planets changing signs in June, indicating many changes in circumstances happening -- you may experience a lot of "shifting gears" going on, practically on a daily basis. On the other hand, following Mars' direct station on the 4th, it should gradually become easier to get work done without hassles and frustrations. So no big ups or downs, just a lot of plugging away is the news for June. Pace yourself and take it easy.

If you look at just the 10 major planets and the traditional aspects, June might look like an uneventful month. But when you throw in Chiron and the asteroids, a very busy picture emerges. There are 5 important sign changes this month (not to mention the faster planets that always change signs during a month). It's a big game of planetary musical chairs going on. That's why I mentioned the "shifting gears" phenomenon earlier. In addition, Mars is standing still on the 4th and there are 2 big aspects to mention.

Chiron Reenters Scorpio, 6-1

Chiron backs up from Sagittarius into Scorpio on the 1st. This is the mid-point of Chiron's 10 month transition into Sag, a time to take stock of how well we're catching on to the new energy. Chiron in Sag has a number of critical themes. First of all is our addiction to "believing in the one truth" and "being right" -- an endless source of trouble in a multi-cultural world. Disagreements between people who have differing "one true beliefs" are exaggerated by the Sagittarius influence, which tends to inflate a "fundamentalist" streak in all of us. It produces splits between us based on fear, insecurity and a lack of vision and understanding. It's time to dip back into Scorpio, into the recesses of your own unconscious, to come to terms with these fears and misunderstandings, to heal the hurt within you before you can pass it along to someone else. It's only when all this "Scorpio muck" is transformed that we became agents of change in the outer world (Sag) via our own internal struggles. In fact, the inner journey of the last several years has simply been preparing us to handle change in a conscious fashion. We need to work through the final blockages, to free ourselves from restrictive beliefs, to become comfortable with tolerance and ambiguity, by the time Chiron moves into Sag for good on 9-21.

Mars Direct Station at 24Li27, 6-4

One of the more significant astrological events this month is Mars' direct station at 24Li27 on the 4th. Mars in reverse gear is a portrait of frustrated will-power, of stepping on your own toes constantly and failing to do anything right. Especially now that the stationary point is in Libra, it seems your actions tend to produce nasty responses from the people you affect. There's an underlying lesson here of learning to cooperate with others and include their needs and desires in your plans, but face it, the old Warrior God is not much interested in learning lessons from anyone. This sense of being stymied at every turn should be particularly intense the first week or so of June, but will gradually lift as Mars picks up speed later on. It's a lousy time to start any new projects, unless you enjoy being a masochist, because pure self-interest (the defining trait of Mars energy) is not working now. Wait until after the new moon on the 13th, at least, if you want the going to be smoother.

New Moon at 22Gm20, 6-13

This is a difficult chart to interpret because there's few points of emphasis to latch onto. The new moon is tuned into the Jupiter-Mars opposition that's been active since late May, smoothing some of the rough edges off of it. Jupiter and Mars have been producing a lot of drive and enthusiasm lately, though Mars has been quite a trouble maker for many of us, too. As long as you refrain from throwing your weight around and act in a principled manner, the worst problems should be avoided here. Saturn and friends may be putting us in a serious mood and turning our minds to more ponderous issues. In fact, Saturn, Venus and Neptune are forming a wide T-square, sending the emotions all over the map. You may be moody and dreamy some days, somber on others, and somehow trying to make it all turn out in a pleasant fashion for yourself. Overall, the coming month seems volatile and changeable, without any clear direction. Settle down and take things one day at a time...

Juno Reenters Scorpio, 6-13

Juno also backs into Scorpio from Sagittarius, on the 13th. As I mentioned earlier this year, Juno and Chiron are playing tag during most of 1999, since their retrograde cycles this year are completely overlapping. In fact, Juno's retrograde zone includes Pluto as well, making this a powerful transformative trio that is playing out through our close partnerships. There's some old emotional issues raising their heads in coming months that are messing up your relationships with people close to you. The reactions can be quite heated and irrational, creating a huge backlash on occasion. Beware of particular emotions like jealousy or envy (what I call in my flower essence work "perversions of love and the heart") that pit your interests against those of your partner. If you're honest about the situation, you'll see that your common interests are more important than such petty emotional games. This kind of "me vs. you" relationship is probably based on past experiences and bad relationships that don't apply now -- in a nutshell, grow up and get over it. I suspect that partners that can't make the transition will be splitting up over the summer. Juno reenters Sag on August 31. Remember this is part of the lead-up to the Chiron-Pluto conjunction (a real blockbuster!) on Dec 30.

Jupiter Quintile Uranus, 6-19

Jupiter is quintile Uranus on the 19th, the first of 3 such contacts. The remaining two contacts are on 12-2 and 2000-2-7 -- this is the start of another long-term influence. Jupiter and Uranus have been making a lot of contacts with each other this year, which tends to really stir things up in our lives. They are both mental planets of sorts, although their styles differ radically. Jupiter is optimistic and expansive, helping to widen our boundaries and perspectives, and letting us see the "big picture" about us. However, his perspective tends to be rather traditional and conventional. He acts by expanding boundaries incrementally, working within the system and accepted rules of behavior. Uranus couldn't care less about convention. He's more of a lightning bolt out of the blue that shakes things up and lets us see matters from a totally new point of view. He works intuitively, by leaps and bounds that have no respect for traditional logic or wisdom. In short, these two have been stirring up your mental environment, your beliefs and structures almost continuously lately. The quintile is the latest in this series of shocks. Quintiles are also known as a mental contact, but of a curious sort. It operates by "jumping out of the system", examining the issues from a mountain top that towers over all the conflicts and makes them look insignificant. It represents a point of view that overcomes problems, not by forcing a resolution of some kind, but by changing the landscape so much the problems become irrelevant. This can be an exciting, exhilarating time, but only if you're comfortable with the change and chaos it brings. Let your guard down and allow the shifts to happen -- life is much easier from this mountain top.

Jupiter Quincunx Chiron, 6-20

Jupiter is also quincunx Chiron on the 20th. They repeat this contact on 10-10 and 2000-5-1. Changing your point of view is fine, but usually there's something lurking in the background of the psyche that tries to hold us back. The human psyche has very ancient roots, reaching back millions of years, so it tends to act conservatively most of the time. We're not suited to growing by leaps and bounds, even though current circumstances require that kind of unlimited adaptability of us now. When pressed by stressful situations, we usually fall back on old behavior patterns that have served us (often badly) in the past, but may be totally unsuited to the present. Jupiter is acting in a headstrong and stubborn manner (Aries and Taurus), while Chiron is stuck in his fundamentalist, emotionally hung-up fashion (Sag and Scorpio). And the quincunx itself is a bit of a stress all by itself. Look to where you're holding yourself back, where outdated beliefs and behaviors are preventing you from coming to terms with the world. Usually the hang-ups can be found in your personal past, in situations that left their mark on you and hold you in emotional bondage. Even your dreams of expanding into the world, making your mark there, of creating abundance and support in your life, can be surrounded by fears and worries that make it impossible. Work through those fears, so your dreams may thrive.

Pallas Enters Gemini, 6-21

Pallas enters Gemini on the 21st, staying until 8-18. Here's an influence to get the old brain cells working in overdrive! Pallas is the part of the thinking mind that excels at planning and foresight, the ability to size up a situation and figure out how to get from point A to point B in order to accomplish some goal or vision. Gemini is a mental sign, creating a quick and facile way of understanding and interacting with the world. It's time to put some plans into action, while your ability to see past the problem areas is particularly acute. Keep in mind that while the thinking mind is working overtime, this placement tends to inhibit the emotions and intuitions. Do a "reality check" on your plans from time to time, just to keep your vision from becoming extremist or distorted (as the thinking mind is prone to do). Artistic pursuits may be especially useful now.

Vesta Enters Virgo, 6-23

Vesta slips from Leo (after a long 9 month stay) into Virgo on the 23rd. Vesta has a natural affinity for Virgo, it seems. There's something quiet and reserved about both of them, a retreat from the limelight into a private space. Vesta finds her strength and unique gifts by retreating into herself and withdrawing from the world. Granted, the service-oriented nature of Virgo can work against this need to go within oneself, but the quiet, unassuming manner of this sign can allow you to go about your business in the world within getting overly involved. This is an especially good time to make changes related to health matters simply because it's for your own good. It's easier to appreciate this kind of being good to yourself now. Immersing yourself in craft or hobby work may also be a satisfying outlet. Vesta exits Virgo on 8-27.

Jupiter Enters Taurus, 6-28

Finally, Jupiter lumbers from Aries into Taurus on the 28th. Like many of the sign changes of the slower planets recently, this is an extended 3-part passage back and forth across the Aries-Taurus border that isn't complete until Feb 14, 2000. This placement enhances our interest in tangible, material pleasures and resources, making us reach out to those things that make life more comfortable and satisfying. You may feel like settling down now, but beware of a tendency to get lazy or just let things take care of themselves. In my experience, letting things slide like that generally produces disappointing results. Your contacts with other people under this influence can be pleasant, satisfying and tend to the sensuous side; the assistance of others may be the key to improving your own material well-being. Just watch out that you don't let them do all the work for you, since that creates no foundation you can count on after they leave. Jupiter dips back into fiery Aries on 10-22.

Full Moon at 6Cp45, 6-28

Jupiter is in Taurus now, the last of the planets changing signs this month. Superficially, this looks like a time to relax and settle into a routine again. However, the world may have it's own ideas about what should happen, since there are a number of outer planets (notably Neptune and Pluto) affecting the full moon point. That hints at something brewing at an unconscious level that may take us by surprise at some point. The thinking mind may be foggy now, heavily affected by vague impressions and images that defy comprehension. The emotional side is also being influenced, making for some wild mood swings. It's probably a bad time to make major purchases of items based on their aesthetic value, since I can assure you your sense of taste is suffering a lapse. Try to sift through all these weird influences at work under the surface -- it's best not to commit yourself to any major projects until you have some clarity about all these shifting currents. Talking matters through with someone you can trust will help, if you can keep your feelings out of it, since it's nearly impossible to sort it out on your own. We each have a piece of the puzzle to share.
