****1996 Ice Bike Race Results****

Many were cold but few were frozen... Given the cold, windy conditions, the turnout was quite good for the 5th Annual MnHPVA Ice Bike Races, on White Bear Lake, January 26th 1996. Many spectators showed up due to a St Paul Pioneer Press article a few days earlier. Next year we may even get the winners last name. (Sorry, Mark???) Pictured below are two of the entries that suffered from lack of testing. The long one, John Mallak's had stability problems as he tried flat ground skate blades. Theoretically faster, they don't give as much side grip as V ground blades. The short one, Sean Costin's had similar problems. I suspect related to center of the axel steering of the rear skates. After the race, we descended, without warning, on the White Bear Lake Pizza Hut to hold our awards ceremony. Unfortunately, there was a kid's birthday party scheduled to arrive in minutes. It was amazing to watch the small staff provide excellent service despite the sudden overload. Trophys were smoked fish, reflecting the watery venue. We may have been louder than the 6 year olds, and having more fun.
