How does 2LVCO work differently?

Two-line VCO represents a dramatic shift in the structure of the relay call. In standard relay and VCO calls, the CA (caller assistant) sits between the user and the called party. The CA controls the dialing to and call set with the called party.

In 2LVCO, the user sits between the CA and the called party. The user controls the dialing to and call set up with the called party. To review the progression of relay technology, click on each type of call in turn.

(Note: These graphics were developed for a summer convention in Little Rock that had the theme "HOT!" In addition, I served on a panel about "HOT! Dates," hence the imagery used. Please accept these graphics in the humor intended.)

There are three types of relay calls a hearing-impaired person can make to a hearing person:
  1. Standard relay: TDD-to-CA-to-called party
  2. Voice carry-over: CA "bridges" the user's voice to the called party
  3. Two-line VCO: The user sits in between the CA and called party and controls the call
