Geography of Teravide

Teravide comprises two subcontinent-sized land masses, along with a number of smaller islands.  Gervais, to the north, is the larger of the two subcontinents, and also the more varied in terms of climate and terrain.  Soucy, to the south, is mostly deciduous forest and grasslands, but it also has a huge uninhabited middle section, the Zone of Contagion.

Except for the far north (particularly the frozen waste known as the Howling Lands), Teravide features temperate climates.  Most of central Gervais has cold winters, with dry and cool summers.  Southern Gervais tends to be somewhat warmer and stickier in summer, and gets regular, moderate rainfall all year.  The Great Lakes region of western Soucy is a very mild temperate rainforest, with only slight seasonal variations.  The eastern end of Soucy has wet winters and very humid summers.

Deserts

Virouin Desert
The Virouin Desert is temperate, with warm, windy afternoons and cold nights.   At its heart, it is nearly lifeless, but it is a little more hospitable near its fringes.  There is occasional traffic here, but few permanent settlements.  Sandstorms are a major hazard.

White Isles
These isles off the west coast of Gervais consist of little more than bare rock and fine, white sand.  Rumor has it that pirates have used the White Isles as a base of operations, but this has not been confirmed.

Forests

Great Northern Forest
Stretching from the Sjölander mountains in the west, all the way to Morency in the east, is the Great Northern Forest, a mostly coniferous forest with typically poor soils.  Human herders and fishermen have formed scattered communities throughout this area, as have large numbers of wood elves.

West Soucy Rainforest
Surrounding the Great Lakes in northwest Soucy is a massive and vibrant temperate rainforest.  Once a stronghold of high elven power, it was conquered by the Mulvennans and extensively logged and farmed.  Since the war, it has again fallen into elven hands.

Zone of Contagion
Between the high cliffs at Thiffault and the Cordon Vert is a vast swath of low-lying forest known as the Zone of Contagion.  It is a land utterly devoid of humans or other civilized creatures, because it is home to a terrible and mysterious disease which afflicts all who visit there.  As a result, almost nothing is known of this area, save that it is thickly forested.

Marshes

Le Marais
The Marais is a huge swamp in southern Gervais which surrounds the city of Charron.  A large portion of the swamp consists of flooded standing timber, making the place almost unnaturally dark.  Since the war, the Marais has become very dangerous for travelers, especially for barge traffic along the Villemure River between Charron and Narbonne.

Mountains and Hills

Åhlen Mountains
The northernmost mountain range in Teravide, the Åhlens also feature the continent's only active volcanoes.

Burnt Hills
The Burnt Hills are an area of rocky, soot-black highlands along the Villemure Rouge, northwest of Charron.

Cordon Vert
The Cordon Vert is a small, unimposing mountain range in central Soucy, which forms the border between the Zone of Contagion and what are now the occupied territories of the Republic of Thorburn.  This is the only mountain range in Teravide not under the sovereignty of the dwarven High King.

Sjölander Mountains
The Sjölanders are an extremely forbidding mountain range in northwestern Gervais.  They are home to huge numbers of dwarves, who keep regular patrols to limit the number of hostile creatures who dwell here.  Spectacular cliffs surround Roussel Bay, which juts into the range's northern end.

Ulfsberg Range
The Ulfsbergs are the easternmost of the great chain of mountains that spreads across northern Gervais.  They have the richest mineral wealth of any of Teravide's mountains, and are also home to the magnificent underground city of Thelvenheim, the seat of dwarven power.

Plains

Central Gervaisien Steppe
The Gervaisien steppe is bounded by the Sjölanders in the west, the Great Northern Forest to the north, the Ulfsbergs to the east, and the Burnt Hills to the south.  It is typically cool and dry, with comparatively poor soils, and a low population density relative to other parts of Teravide.  Some of the humans and halflings who inhabit the steppe adopt a semi-nomadic lifestyle.

Howling Lands
This island in the far north is continuously whipped by frigid winds, giving the place its unusual name.  It is uninhabited, although fishermen will make camp here from time to time.  Not much is known of the geography beyond the coasts, but it is certainly home to a variety of hostile creatures.

Seas and Lakes

Great Lakes
Lake Païvi and Lake Sari are the Great Lakes of Teravide.  Both are clear, unexpectedly shallow and warm, and, before the war at least, they supported a large volume of trade and transportation.  The city of Waterbury was located on the isthmus between the two lakes; it now lies mostly in ruins.

Mer des Veuves
The Mer des Veuves (Sea of Widows) separates Gervais from Soucy.  It is generally quite shallow, and has a great many dangerous reefs, particularly near Lessard, at the northeast tip of Soucy.  To make matters worse, the currents in the Mer are often treacherous, and the weather typically rough.

Lake Miolane
Lake Miolane, in the highlands of the Central Gervaisien Steppe, is extremely deep and extremely cold.  There are reports of fierce creatures lurking in its depths, but the shallow areas are fished very extensively.

Lake Morin
Lake Morin is a murky, weedy lake in southwest Gervais.
